On april 16th the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit northern Ecuador late Saturday night. According to government estimates, at least 272 people have been killed, with more than 2527 injured. The Ecuadorian Red Cross has been responding since the minutes following the earthquake. Hundreds of volunteers and staff have supported search and rescue efforts and provided on the spot first aid to survivors. In the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabi and the cities of Portoviejo and Guayaquil, Red Cross health teams, and hospital and pre-hospital care units have been activated, and a National Disaster Response Team has been deployed to carry out assessments that will guide the coming relief and recovery operation. The IFRC Regional Office in Panama has activated its Emergency Operations Systems including the Emergency Operations Centre and has deployed additional disaster management capacity to Ecuador. A Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) allocation will be issued today, and a subsequent appeal is under development. Any help will be much appreciated. The donations will be transferred to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and will be used by Ecuadorian Red Cross for helping people who suffered during the earthquake.
