In the past few years, and especially last weeks, the number of people embarking on dangerous journeys by sea and land to seek protection or better life opportunities across borders has grown exponentially. Their journeys are perilous, and have become more so partly due to stricter migration policies and border control practices that limit access to asylum. Episodes of xenophobia, discrimination, and violence against migrants are also on the rise. These factors contribute to increasing the vulnerability of people on the move.
One of the principles of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is that every single human being deserves to be treated with respect and he/she has all rights to be safe, to seek for a better life and be appreciated without discrimination based on skin colour, religion, country of origin etc. The Red Cross and Red Crescent has been on the frontline of the response, distributing food, water and relief items as well as helping reconnect families that have been separated. While 33% of migrants are in Europe, migration is a global phenomenon that will only intensify due to protracted crises, poverty or climate change.
Global Migration Campaign “Protect Humanity – Stop Indifference” is designed by IFRC as a response to the crisis. We invite the public, government officials, organizations and others to stand up for solidarity with vulnerable migrants, recognizing and guaranteeing the human security and dignity without discrimination at every stage of their travel.
It will be continued right up until the Red Cross Red Crescent International Conference in December where RC will represent all those who signed up to the campaign call for the protection of vulnerable migrants to be a universal responsibility. The campaign will also reinforce and galvanise action in countries of origin, transit and destination.
From September 17th and onwards, we encourage to add your own voice to our collective call at www.ifrc.org/protecthumanity!
